Building the Road to Career Success
As a professional, you can build your own road to career success. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it alone. If you’ve been thinking about the next steps in your career, expanding and strengthening your professional network, and how to effectively manage and achieve your career goals, attend the Tools for Career Assessment and Development workshop.
This workshop is structured to give you career building tools whether your goal is to advance within your current field or change careers altogether. The workshop will be held July 23 from 12:30pm-1:30pm at 3624 Market Street, 1A South. Bryant Kuehner, Training and Development Consultant, HR Learning and Education, will facilitate this free workshop.
“It’s really about having the tools and techniques to figure out where you are in your career now, where you want to be in your career, and what you need to do to get from point A to point B,” said Kuehner.
The workshop will cover the following topics and outline how they work together in a plan to keep you on track while working towards your career goals.
Understanding types of career movement: A career lattice will be used to demonstrate the different ways staff can move around at Penn. “We try to dispel this preconception that you’re just going to move in a straight line up through an organization,” Kuehner says. “Sometimes you might take a sideways move. Sometimes you might even take step back to--as we say--slingshot yourself into a more fulfilling career in the future.”
Conducting a career analysis: Evaluate where you are currently in your career. Identify your values, and the things that you like and don’t like about your current job. Consider what you want to see and would like to achieve in your next position.
Performing a career gap analysis: Do you have potential knowledge or skills gaps that need attention? Learn how to identify those gaps and develop a plan to overcome them.
Employing SWOT Analysis: Identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to help determine the direction of your next career path.
Building solid networks: Assess the current state of your professional network and identify strengths and opportunities for enhancing that network. Kuehner says, “It is good to have a really robust professional network at Penn. Think about forming and strengthening relationships with people who can help you to advance your career. That could be helpful when moving in to a new position.”

Join the Be in the Know 6,000 This Summer

So far more than 6,000 faculty and staff members completed biometric screenings during the 2018-2019 campaign. Time is running out to join this health-conscious group of Penn faculty and staff.
The final biometric screening 2018-2019 will take place July 24, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in Irvine Auditorium Amado Recital room. Space is limited, so register online soon. The screening includes a free confidential blood pressure, cholesterol level and blood sugar check.
Biometric screenings are Step 1 toward earning Be in the Know cash incentives. If you can’t attend on-campus biometric screenings, you can complete Step 1 by sending in results from biometric screenings conducted by your physician between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Simply download and complete the Be in the Know Biometric Screening Consent Form, then follow the submission directions. Your test results are due on July 31.
Step 2 is completing the online health assessment on Penn’s StayWell portal by August 31. Steps 1 and 2 are the two Core Actions required to earn your first $100.
Keep going with Step 3, Bonus Actions, to earn up to $300 for the campaign--plus the opportunity to score more points to reach Be in the Know VIP status. To become a Be in the Know VIP, we encourage you to earn an additional 50 Bonus Action points to reach 250 (or 350 total campaign points). All VIPs will receive a special gift at the end of the campaign year and an invitation to a reception in their honor this fall.

Human Resources Policy Update Overview
On July 1, University staff members received an email announcing updates to Penn’s Human Resources policies for fiscal year 2019-2020, including the addition of three new policies:
These new policies, along with all the revisions, are available in the online Human Resources Policy Manual. These changes will not impact faculty and staff members’ benefits eligibility, time off, and pay. Most changes are technical and administrative updates to existing policies; these policy modifications integrate Workday@Penn with University Human Resources operations. The changes also reflect the University’s ongoing commitment to organizational best practices, financial stewardship, transparency, and compliance with local, state, and federal law.
Time Reporting Requirement Reminder
Under the new Time Reporting policy, all weekly-paid non-exempt staff, temporary staff, and student workers will report their hours worked and time away from work (i.e., sick leave and paid time off) each week in Workday. Their supervisors or designated administrators will approve these time reports.
- To receive a paycheck, all individuals paid on an hourly basis need to enter their time into Workday.
- Weekly timesheet submissions are due by Sunday at 9 pm Eastern time.
If you use a time clock system to report for the week, your time clock data will automatically feed into Workday for review and approval. If an individual cannot enter his/her time, the manager or timekeeper can enter it on his/her behalf.
Staff Paid Time Off Requests
The revised Paid Time Off policy states that all scheduled staff paid time off requests must be entered into Workday for supervisor approval. This policy change covers monthly-paid staff and weekly-paid staff. Unscheduled paid time off must also be requested in Workday. Staff members should enter it as soon as possible. If staff members are unable to do so, their supervisors may enter the request into Workday on their behalf.
Postdoc Time Away
Postdoctoral Trainees may use Workday to report sick leave and request paid time off according to their department, school or center policies and procedures.

Workday@Penn makes weekly time reporting and time off requests easier. Employees and supervisors will have access to one system of record for fairness, transparency, and clarity. To learn more, faculty, staff, and student workers can take Workday self-service courses online at www.workday.upenn.edu/home/training. Step-by-step Workday tips sheets are also available.

Summer Construction Limits SEPTA University City Station Service
This summer, SEPTA’s Arsenal Interlocking Reconstruction Project will enter another phase: the Southwest Connection Improvement Program. Round-the-clock construction is scheduled for Saturday, July 20 – Sunday, August 4 (including weekdays), affecting the regional rail lines that normally stop at University City Rail Station.
During this two-week infrastructure rebuild, these lines will not stop at University City Station:
Select Chestnut Hill East, Fox Chase, Glenside, Lansdale/Doylestown, Manayunk/Norristown, Warminster and West Trenton Line trains will continue to provide service to University City Station. However, departure times for these lines may differ from their regular schedules.
Check SEPTA’s Southwest Connection Service Change timetable and www.septa.org/southwestconnection/uc for details about modified services.
Rail passengers are advised to allow extra time for commuting or consider alternative transportation. Other commuters may be affected due to increased traffic on nearby streets and roads.
If SEPTA’s infrastructure project will disrupt your travel to and from campus, consider flexible work options. Penn encourages supervisors to consider flexible scheduling or to facilitate remote work--when appropriate--to allow staff members to commute safely while maintaining productivity. Staff members are advised to consider the organizational needs of their department and to communicate with their supervisor before requesting adjustments to their schedule or work location.
