June Is Employee Health and Wellness Month

Each June, Penn celebrates the well-being of its staff and faculty during Employee Health and Wellness Month. This recognition reflects Penn’s commitment to improving your physical activity, nutrition, stress levels, financial well-being, and overall health and wellness. Throughout the month, staff and faculty can choose from a variety of events and activities to get revitalized while having fun with your coworkers.

Summer Programs for Penn Community Kids

Are you looking for fun and engaging activities for your children this summer? It’s not too late to explore Penn’s lineup of activities for young children and teens. These Penn-connected programs still have registration openings.

Penn Museum Anthropology Camp

Space is still available in many Penn Museum summer programs for young learners. Celebrate summer fun and learning through Penn Museum’s world-renowned collections. Each week features an exciting theme with hands-on workshops, expert talks, gallery explorations, and more. Penn Museum Anthropology Camp is designed for children ages 6–13 who will enter grades 1-8 in the 2024–2025 school year. Tech Revolution STEM Summer Camps

Penn is hosting Camp Tech Revolution programs right on campus to give younger students a taste of college life. While courses are filling fast, there are several programs accepting enrollment throughout the summer. These weekly, cutting-edge courses cover an array of subjects such as tech camps in Robotics, Coding, Game Design, Minecraft, Roblox, Artificial Intelligence, 3D Printing, Content Creation for YouTube, Filmmaking, Digital Art, Spy Tech, and Medicine. Bright Horizons Back-up Care and Virtual Camps

Bright Horizons virtual and in-person camp experiences are available to eligible Penn faculty, staff, and postdoctoral families. School-age children can join camp days at participating back-up care centers, with a copay of $15 per day. These back-up care days not only provide safe and supervised environments for children but also include interactive virtual camp activities that cater to children aged 3-12. To access these camp services, simply complete a back-up care profile by visiting https://clients.brighthorizons.com/penn. On the portal, you can browse Steve & Kate’s Camp locations in New Jersey, New York, and the Washington, D.C. region.

Penn Band Camp

The Penn Band High School Summer Music Camp (Grades 8-12) is a week-long instrumental music experience annually held on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. This year’s program runs July 14 through July 20. Currently in its 21st year, our student-centered and student-driven program provides visiting musicians with a unique blend of music and mirth, set against the backdrop of our historic college campus and the City of Philadelphia. Registration must be completed by July 3, 2024.

Musicians of all ability levels are welcome to enroll, and no auditions are necessary. Additionally, the camp will be partnering again with Musicopia to bring this program to the students of Philadelphia. Penn employees receive a 10% discount on camp tuition. Establishing Connections with Your Colleagues

What does it take to create a work environment where all staff can freely express who they are, their own opinions, and points of view while building trust among colleagues? Penn’s Building Connections: Strategies for Creating Trust, Collaboration, and Inclusion program will show you how. The two-part program is accepting nominations for new participants. Part 1 will be held on July 25, 2024 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Part 2 will take place on August 22, 2024 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nominations are due on June 24, 2024.

In this program, participants will receive a comprehensive overview of inclusive leadership that develops your understanding and skills in creating inclusive environments. By completing this course, participants will enhance their ability to foster inclusivity, build trust, and become effective allies in their personal and professional lives. This course is broken up into five sections:

  1. What is Trust?
  2. The Pillars of Trust
  3. Counterfeit Trust Behaviors
  4. Leadership Behaviors that Emphasize Inclusion
  5. Leadership Behaviors that Emphasize Exclusion

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explore the fundamental pillars of trust.
  • Create an action plan to build and maintain trust.
  • Identify behaviors that emphasize an inclusive workplace.
  • Create an inclusion action plan to become a more inclusive leader.

Managers, in conjunction with the HR partner, may nominate staff for each part from your school or center. The program costs $550. You can submit your program nominations online

Healthy Meals: Black Bean Sliders

Black Bean Slider

These mini burgers are a delicious way to get a source of protein and fiber, and they are just plain fun to eat. They are easy to make and take just minutes to prepare. You can serve them as appetizers or snacks. If you are looking for a quick weeknight dinner, simply add a side salad and you have a meal that the whole family will enjoy.

Ingredients

2- 16oz cans black beans, drained and rinsed

2 carrots, finely chopped

1/2 cup seasoned whole grain breadcrumbs

1 egg, beaten

2 teaspoons chili powder

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon pepper

7 small, whole grain slider buns

1 red onion, sliced

1 avocado, sliced or mashed

1 Roma tomato, sliced


Directions

  1. Place 1 1/2 cups of black beans into a large bowl and mash using a fork. Add remaining black beans and combine with carrots, breadcrumbs, egg, and spices.
  2. Scoop 1/4 cup out at a time and form into a patty. Repeat for the remaining patties.
  3. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Spray the skillet with cooking spray or a teaspoon of olive oil. Place the patties into the skillet and cook until browned on each side, about 2-3 minutes per slide. Can also grill on a greased aluminum foil for 5-8 minutes on each side. (350° F/ 177°C).
  4. Remove from the skillet and enjoy with the toppings of choice.
