Sun Safety for All
Sunlight can brighten your mood and boost your vitamin D, but if you’re not careful, its ultraviolet (UV) rays can harm your skin. This is true for people of all colors
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “No matter your skin type, UV radiation from the sun and other sources can cause dangerous, lasting damage to your skin. This means that people of any ethnic background, even those who always tan or rarely burn, can still get skin cancer.”
Skin cancer is the most common cancer, not only in the United States, but everywhere under the sun. So be sure to protect yourself with these summer sun safety tips from the Health Advocate Blog:
- Avoid purposeful tanning. Spending the day at the pool or beach? Load up on sunscreen and avoid just laying out in the direct sun. Avoid tanning beds, period.
- Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply at least every 2 hours.
- Wear sunglasses with total UV protection (Read The Sun, UV Light and Your Eyes to learn more sun-smart tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.)
- Stay in the shade as much as possible. Avoid direct exposure as much as possible during peak UV radiation hours, between 10 am and 2 pm.
- Wear wide-brimmed hats that cover and protect areas like your head, neck, face and ears.
- Wear clothing made of tightly woven fabrics that are bright colors.
- If you already have sunburn, stay inside until it heals. If you have to go out, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to prevent further skin damage.
If you notice any suspicious spots on your skin or feel uncomfortable with the way a mole is changing, it is important to talk to your doctor. In fact, you should see a dermatologist once a year for a skin check, or more often if recommended based on your family and medical history.

Getting to Know Workday Performance Management
Now that the Workday Performance Management process is available to managers and their staff, you may have some specific questions about its structure, how to navigate the new system, and the benefits to using it. The Workday team has compiled some FAQs
to help guide you.
Why are we changing our performance management system to Workday?
As a secure, market-leading, cloud-based technology, Workday has met the University’s need for compliance, accountability, efficiency, and keeping pace with technology, since 2019. Workday performance management integrates with all the functions in payroll and human resources that the University uses. This change aligns with the renewed focus on performance management and talent development by the Division of Human Resources, which has led the configuration of the new functions.
What is the benefit of using Workday for performance reviews?
Using an integrated solution for performance reviews provides staff with a single, familiar system to document conversations about fulfilling the requirements of their positions and developing their careers at the University. This change will enhance conversations between managers and staff around career growth and talent development, empower managers with more tools to assist and guide their staff with professional development, and position staff to better plan and prepare for their careers at Penn. Note that staff covered by collective bargaining agreements and Penn Medicine clinicians do not use the Workday processes for performance management.
What is the new performance review cycle?
The performance review cycle requires two reviews per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The spring performance review incorporates an annual performance rating and will be completed shortly before the annual merit process launches.
What are the performance ratings?
In the spring of 2023, managers will use the following rating system:
- Does not meet expectations — Did not meet most goals and/or often fell short of standards for timeliness, quality, and/or resource utilization.
- Meets some but not all expectations — Acceptable performance overall, though did not meet some goals or sometimes fell short of standards for timeliness, quality, and/or resource utilization.
- Fulfills expectations — Successfully met all goals, consistently meeting standards for timeliness, quality, and/or resource utilization.
- Exceeds expectations —Successfully met all goals and regularly surpassed standards for timeliness, quality, and/or resource utilization.
What competencies will be part of my Workday performance review?
When the mid-year review is launched in the fall of 2022, all staff positions will have new competencies linked to their job based on their job profile and management level, such as entry level, individual contributor, or executive. All staff will be evaluated on these competencies, which are based on a model from Korn Ferry, a global leader in organizational management with decades of research and analysis. The model has been reviewed and adapted by the Division of Human Resources in collaboration with schools and centers. More information on competencies will be available shortly.
What are Workday check-ins?
Managers and staff can use check-ins and check-in topics for informal coaching and career conversations and document these conversations in Workday. Check-ins are intended to support performance reviews. More information on check-ins will be available shortly. Check-ins are optional but highly recommended.
What are the new goal categories?
Goals may be managed by managers and staff on demand through the year, not just during performance review. Managers and staff are encouraged to begin conversations about goals and enter them in Workday. Every goal can be assigned a category and due date for efficient tracking and management of progress. The categories are:
- Performance/Operational
- Project/Initiative
- Competency/Interpersonal Development
- Professional Development
Will I be able to access past performance review information?
Yes, if you participated in the old system, your final performance rating and final manager comments will be available in Workday by the fall of 2022. Participants in Workday’s ongoing feedback program will still be able to view the historical information of the past two years.
Where can I find information using Workday for goals and performance reviews?
Both managers and their direct reports can use the online tip sheet, Goals and Performance Management, on the Workday website. If you have questions or would like more information, contact your manager, the Human Resources representative in your school or center, or the Penn Employee Solution Center at solutioncenter@upenn.edu or 215-898-7372.
