Is Retirement Planning Different for Women?

Large pink purseA dollar is a dollar, whether it’s in a wallet or a purse, so why is retirement planning different for women? Many women’s careers include part-time work, time away from the paid workforce, and—in some instances—lower paying jobs. That can mean less money invested in retirement. Perhaps the biggest factor that makes retirement different for women is greater longevity. Today, half of all U.S. women over 75 live alone, so retirement funds are especially crucial to women’s financial security.

In spite of these challenges, women can take control of their money and plan for a secure future. She’s Got It: A Woman’s Guide to Saving and Investing is a smart way to start. This free program is available to faculty and staff on November 19 from 11am to 12:30pm. Register online and take care of business!

At She’s Got It, a financial professional from TIAA-CREF will cover the basics of personal finance with women’s lifestyles in mind. This seminar looks at goal setting, insurance, saving for education, and retirement investing for women who want to support themselves and their families now and in the future.

All benefits eligible faculty and staff have access to free one-on-one retirement counseling throughout the year from Penn’s investment carriers, TIAA-CREF and Vanguard. To schedule a session, contact:
