One-Step Investing / Target-Date Funds
"Do it for me" investors
These funds are designed to give you a simple solution to saving for retirement. With a single-fund election, you'll be invested in a variety of asset classes (e.g., bonds, stocks) and your asset allocation will automatically adjust as you age. You'll
have a ready-made, diversified portfolio within a single investment choice. These funds are managed to a specific time horizon - usually a "targeted" retirement date based on when you reach age 65. Your investment portfolio will automatically adjust
from aggressive to conservative as you near your selected retirement date.
Core Funds
The "Help Me Do It" Option
These funds are designed to help you make your own investment choices without having to wade through too many options. The core funds range from money market funds to stock and bond index funds. Choose from these carefully selected fund options to build a balanced portfolio. Your overall investment mix is up to you, and can vary based upon your risk tolerance. It's important to reassess your asset allocation periodically to ensure you're on track to meet your retirement goals.
Supplemental Funds
The “I’ll Do It" Option
These funds are designed for you to create your own lineup, and take a more targeted and active role in investing. The menu of funds covers a variety of asset classes to help you build a portfolio that meets your individual retirement needs and goals. Your overall investment mix is up to you, based on your risk tolerance. It's important to reassess your asset allocation periodically to ensure you're on track to meet your retirement goals.
Brokerage Option
The Self-Directed Investor Option
These funds are designed for people who have a sophisticated understanding of investment principles. A brokerage account allows you to choose from hundreds of investment fund options. You're solely responsible for managing your brokerage account, so be sure you're comfortable with the additional risk involved. You'll also be charged some fees for maintaining a self-directed brokerage account; those fees will depend on your investment carrier and the actual funds you select.
Funds in tiers 1-3 cannot be invested in through brokerage.
You're encouraged to meet with a TIAA retirement plan counselor or a financial planner before choosing this option.
Contributions to brokerage are limited to 90% of the total contribution per pay period to that plan. Additionally, trades from the standard funds to brokerage will be permitted to the extent that they will not bring the participant's brokerage holdings to more than 90% of the total plan balance. However, participants are not required to sell any currently held shares that exceed 90% of the total plan balance. The 90% limit applies to contributions and trades only.
