Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
Penn offers Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits to protect you if you’re unable to work due to a severe injury or illness. STD applies for disabilities up to six months in duration, while LTD covers you if you’re continuously disabled for longer than six months.
Supplemental Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage is available to enhance the group LTD coverage already provided by Penn. Supplemental LTD lets you protect more of your income if you become disabled and cannot work.

Short-Term Disability (STD)
Penn's short-term disability benefit provides income protection if you’re unable to work for up to six months due to a severe injury or illness. The coverage is detailed in Human Resources policies for:- Regular full-time staff through position grade 28 (Short-Term Disability Policy)
- Faculty and staff members at or above position grade 29, and/or at position grades E–H (Sick Leave and STD for Employees At or Above Position Grade 29 or in Grades E, F, G Policy)
Long-Term Disability (LTD)
Long-term disability coverage is for continuous disabilities of six months or more. You’re eligible for LTD coverage as of your date of hire, and Penn pays the full cost for this coverage.
If you’re unable to work due to a covered long-term disability, Penn’s group LTD plan (administered by Aetna)—in combination with income from other sources—provides a benefit of 60% of your base salary to a maximum of $15,000 per month. Under current law, these benefits are subject to federal income tax only; they are exempt from Social Security, Medicare, state, and local income taxes.
Detailed information is in the Health and Welfare Summary Plan Description.
Supplemental Long-Term Disability (LTD)
To enhance the coverage in Penn’s group Long-Term Disability benefit, Penn offers a Supplemental LTD program that lets you protect more of your income if you become disabled and can’t work.
The program offers the advantages of tax-free benefits, portability, and enhanced protection if you’re unable to work. If you apply during your enrollment window, you’re guaranteed acceptance into the plan as long as you have been actively at work for the past six consecutive months at Penn or with a previous employer. There is no medical underwriting or need to prove good health. The policy includes a 12/12 pre-existing condition exclusion. If you apply outside of your enrollment window, you can still be considered for coverage as a late entrant, and medical underwriting is required.
If you’re a new full-time faculty or staff member, you’ll receive detailed enrollment information at your home address. You can also read the details online or view a video presentation.
