What is Maintain, Don't Gain?
The holiday season countdown has begun. Soon you’ll be gathering to celebrate with family and friends—and you’ll be confronted by tempting food everywhere. But we can help you embrace the fun of the season without packing on extra pounds!

Maintain, Don’t Gain is an eight-week program that can help you maintain your weight during the holiday season. The goal is to stay within two to three pounds of your starting weight during those tough weeks when temptation seems to lurk around every corner. To keep you motivated, you’ll be weighed in before and after the holidays, and will receive weekly tips to help you maintain healthy behaviors.

Why Participate in the Maintain, Don't Gain Program?
If you want to improve your physical and mental health and well-being, Maintain, Don't Gain can help you set and achieve meaningful goals. Although the program begins during the holiday season, it teaches you to think in a healthful way all year long.

What Do I Have to Do?
The program is simple. Just come to the weigh-ins before and after the holidays and keep your weight within a certain range:

  • No more than a 2 pound increase for those who weigh under 175 pounds.
  • No more than a 3 pound increase for those who weigh 175 pounds or more.
Pre- and post-holiday weights will be recorded and maintained by Suzanne Smith, Health Promotion Specialist, and other Quality of Worklife (QOWL) staff. Your weights and private information will be kept absolutely confidential, and you'll be given a record of your initial and final weigh-in amounts.

Team Competition
You can even spice up the competition by creating your own Maintain, Don’t Gain team. Grab a few colleagues, give yourselves a team name, and let the games begin! If your team members maintain or lose weight by the final weigh-in, you’ll be highlighted on the Maintain, Don’t Gain honor roll.

When and Where Are Weigh-ins Held?
Weigh-ins are held at several convenient locations around Penn's campus. Post-holiday weigh-in dates are below:

How Do I Sign Up?
Registration for Maintain, Don't Gain begins in November. By pre-registering, you help us prepare for demand, keep lines short and reduce wait times to a few minutes.

You will need a PennKey logon and password to participate in the Maintain, Don't Gain program. Register for a PennKey here if you do not already have one.

Once registration begins in November, follow the instructions below to pre-register:

  1. Go to the Health Promotion section of the online course catalog.
  2. Review the Maintain, Don't Gain time slots and location options.
  3. Click on your preferred date, time and location.
  4. Click the “Register for this Course” icon at the bottom of the page and follow the prompts.
  5. Follow the registration instructions and print your “Confirmation Statement” at the very end of the process. Bring this with you to your chosen weigh-in.
