Model Supervisor Behaviors
Certain behaviors reflect the University's standards for a Model Supervisor. The Selection Committee will use these behaviors as the criteria to identify individuals who qualify for this award.

Nomination Process
Nominations for the Model Supervisor Award are due in the fall of each year. Any member of the Penn community can nominate a Model Supervisor. We seek nominations of supervisors who practice the Model Supervisor Behaviors established for this program and serve as outstanding examples for the campus to emulate. We welcome nominations of any faculty or staff supervisor from any level of the organization, except senior academic or administrative leaders of a school or center. References can be provided by anyone other than the nominator. Please note that all components of a nomination must be completed before it will be accepted.

Please note that the nomination must be accompanied by:

  1. A note from the nominee's supervisor that the nominee meets the requirements for this award, and
  2. The nominee's authorization to survey his/her staff as part of the final process for selecting the Model Supervisor.

Selection and Notification Process
An annually rotating Models of Excellence Selection Committee reviews all Model Supervisor nominations and selects finalists. The committee is representative of the diversity of our institution, comprised of Penn leaders (including the Provost, Executive Vice President, and Vice President of Human Resources), previous Models of Excellence award winners, and other faculty and staff members from across campus.

Finalists are notified in March. Human Resources then surveys a randomly selected cohort of the finalists' staff to obtain feedback on each candidate's supervisory behaviors. Leadership makes the final selection considering all of the above information, and the winner of the Model Supervisor Award is announced live at the Models of Excellence Award Ceremony in the spring.

Awards
The individual chosen as the Model Supervisor for the year will receive a cash prize of $500, a symbolic award, and lunch with senior leadership.

An award ceremony and reception for honorees is held each year in the spring. View pictures from previous years' events.
