University of Pennsylvania
Introductory Period Review Process
All new regular staff members are subject to an
Introductory Period during the first four months of employment. The
introductory period may be extended, up to an additional eight months, after
consultation with the Division of Human Resources/Staff and Labor
Relations. The purpose of the Introductory Period is to determine if
the new staff member meets the performance expectations for the
position and if continued employment is warranted. The Introductory
Period Review Process was revised on January 1, 2000 to:
- enhance the newly hired staff member’s understanding
of the performance expectations required for their positions
- enhance the newly hired staff member’s understanding
of the criteria to be used for assessing their performance
- make it easier for supervisors to assess staff
performance against clearly defined and measurable expectations
outlined during the first week of employment.
Any questions regarding the Introductory Period can be
directed to Staff and Labor Relations at 898-6093 or by e-mail to .
Forms and materials used in the Introductory Review
Process are listed below along with brief descriptions:
Introductory
Period Performance Plan
This form is completed by the supervisor or manager. Written
performance expectations and the job description should be shared with the
staff member within the first week of employment. The written performance expectations
can be communicated to the staff member by completing the
Goal/Project/Responsibility section of the Introductory Period
Performance Plan. After discussing the performance expectations and job
description with the staff member during the first week of employment,
the supervisor and staff member should date and initial the
Introductory Period Performance Plan to verify that performance expectations
have been shared with the staff member. Before the end
of the Introductory Period, the supervisor
should assess the staff member’s overall performance by completing and
sharing with the staff member the Introductory Period Performance Plan.
