What is Maintain, Don't Gain?
One of the toughest times of the year for maintaining and/or losing weight is the winter holiday season, from Thanksgiving through New Year's. While the holidays are a time to rejoice, celebrate, and enjoy time with family and friends, many of these activities revolve around food.

Human Resources wants to help you avoid gaining weight during this challenging time through the “Maintain, Don't Gain” holiday weight maintenance program. Last year, the program was a great success—93% of participants were able to either maintain or lose weight.

The Maintain, Don't Gain program offers faculty and staff:

  • pre-and post-holiday weigh-ins at convenient locations across campus,
  • a welcome packet with general information about the program and a form for tracking weight throughout the six weeks of the program, and
  • inspiring messages throughout the holiday time period.

Why Participate in the Maintain, Don't Gain Program?
If you have a desire to improve your physical, mental and emotional health and well-being, or an interest in weight loss or weight maintenance, then Maintain, Don't Gain can help you set and achieve meaningful goals. The program may begin during the holiday season, but it teaches participants to think in a healthful way all year round.

What Do I Have to Do?
The program is simple. Just come to the weigh-ins before and after the holidays and keep your weight within a certain range:

  • No more than a 2 pound increase for those who weigh under 175 pounds.
  • No more than a 3 pound increase for those who weigh 175 pounds or more.
Pre- and post-holiday weights will be recorded and maintained by Suzanne Smith, Health Promotion Specialist, and other Quality of Worklife (QOWL) staff. Please be aware that all weights and private information will be kept absolutely confidential. You will be given a record of your initial and final weigh-in amounts.

Team Competition
You can also create your own "Maintain, Don’t Gain" team. Grab your officemates and friends on campus, give yourselves a team name, and let the competition begin! We'll track how all of your team members are doing and average your results in January. If each team member either maintains or loses weight by the final weigh-in, your team will be highlighted on the Maintain, Don't Gain Honor Roll on this website.

When and Where Are Weigh-ins Held?
